Bearing FAQ

What is a bearing unit?

A housing, usually cast iron, holding a ball bearing and bolted to the machine to support the shaft. The bearing turns; the housing stays put.

UCP or UCF: what is the difference?

Only the mounting. A UCP bolts to a horizontal surface with two bolts; a UCF has a square flange and bolts to a vertical face with four. The bearing inside both is the same.

How do I find the bearing size?

Measure the shaft. The last two digits of the code multiplied by 5 give that diameter: a 30 mm shaft means code 206, a 40 mm shaft means 208.

What is a deep groove ball bearing?

The most common bearing type; its code starts with 6 (6204, 6305 and so on). It takes radial load and some axial load, and suits high speeds.

2RS or ZZ: what is the difference?

Both mean sealed on both sides. 2RS has rubber seals and keeps dust and moisture out better; ZZ has metal shields, runs with less friction and suits higher speeds.
