Pulley, sheave, belt wheel: are they the same thing?
They are the same component. In English you will see pulley, sheave and belt wheel used for it.
How do I identify the belt section?
Measure the top width of the belt with a ruler: about 13 mm is an A section, 17 mm a B section, 22 mm a C section. The section letter and length are usually printed on the belt.
Cast iron or aluminium pulley?
It depends on the duty. Cast iron is heavier and damps vibration, which suits high loads at moderate speed. Aluminium is light, for higher speeds and where weight matters. For small electric motors either works.
How many grooves do I need?
By power. Each groove, meaning each belt, carries a set amount of power given in the belt maker's table. Divide your power by the capacity of one belt and round up.
How accurate is the speed ratio with pulleys?
Not quite. A V-belt always slips a little, roughly one to two percent. If you need an exact speed, use a timing belt or a chain.
